Day 242 | Running and Fertility

I have been feeling a bit weird for the last couple of weeks. I have been running really slow on my long runs. I have had some pain where my leg meets my pelvis, which reminded me of round ligament pain from pregnancy. And on Thursday of last week I had a crazy head ache that lasted all day. Yesterday I decided to take a home pregnancy test just to rule that out.

Well, I couldn’t rule it out because it was positive. I was very surprised. I am 40 years old. And I have had an IUD for the last 4 years which had, up until this point, been a very reliable form of birth control.

I went to see my doctor today because I did some reading last night and it turns out it is not at all safe to be pregnant with an IUD. It is very unsafe for me in fact.

My doctor couldn’t find the IUD so I had to go to an ultrasound facility so they could take a look around and try to find it.

It doesn’t appear that I am very pregnant, probably just 4 or 5 weeks, so it’s very early on. It is sitting right on top of the IUD, which they have to remove so I don’t die, so the odds don’t seem very good that I will be pregnant for long.

I don’t know how unlikely it is that I could get pregnant at my age while using birth control. I can’t help but think that running has something to do with my increased fertility.   My body is in better shape that it has been in years, so it makes some sense that it has triggered a renewal in my fertility.
